Is it Saturday?
I'm hiding, not looking, locking myself away for at least the next couple of days. There has never been a birthday that I've been dreading more. I just want to put my head in the sand and just hide. 31 a number that I'm learning to dread. I turned the big 3-0 last year without a thought! I enjoyed the day as I do every other day. So how come 31 is such a big scary number. I have never let age affect me before and somehow this week has caused me such grief. Grief that I haven't been sharing but for some reason the closer I get to Friday the more my anxiety is shifting into overdrive.
Maybe it is because I always viewed 30 as old when I was a kid so subconsciously I view 31 as ancient. If I'm this way now for 31 I can just imagine what life will be like when I hit the big 4-0! Which is in 9 years. 9-years doesn't seem like a long time, when you put life in perspective.
I'm not even making a cake for myself, I keep asking Hughie if he would like a Joe Louis cake. (Chocolate cake, icing with whipcream in the center). I think he thinks it is because I really don't want to feel compelled to eat my birthday cake but really it is because I don't want my own birthday cake. I wanted a PUMPKIN PIE! But noooo...that won't happen because foodmail from M&M meats only sends up good healthy products...someone should tell them that PUMPKIN is a FRUIT!
I really don't know. I just wish I could put my head in the sand and just hide...or maybe I'm just finally joining the ranks of millions and millions of women who just hate their birthdays...or maybe I'm just being silly.

Finality
Main Entry:fi·nal·i·ty
Pronunciation:\fi-'na-l?-te, f?-\
Function:noun
Inflected Form(s):plural fi·nal·i·ties
Date:1833
1 a: the character or condition of being final, settled, irrevocable, or complete b: the condition of being at an ultimate point especially of development or authority
2: something final ; especially : a fundamental fact, action, or belief
Another season deemed a failure by the fans of the Vancouver Canucks - today fans in Vancouver and around Canada are wondering about Roberto Luongo and his ability to let in 7 goals last night, something he hasn't done in 9 years. I will admit there was at least 3/4 goals that Lu should have had easily but I'm not between the posts and I can't skate so I'm not one to be passing on criticism. Kane and Toews played extremely well last night and so did the rest of the Hawks Organization. They played the better game(s) and they deserved to win this series. I just don't have to like it.
I can take some solace in the fact that we lasted longer than every other Canadian Hockey Team although I do feel like there is a big bottomless black pit in the bottom of my stomach.. my hockey season is over.
I find it hard to cheer on another team that isn't my own. I don't own any other cheering outfits beyond my Vancouver Canuck garb, I have a Fin on my backpack!!
Next year is going to be the year of change for the Vancouver Canucks. Luongo is a free Agent and we only have until the next trade deadline to sign him - which is going to be a hard fought battle with Mike Gillis and Lu's Agent. The twins are up for resigning however I'm not sure it would be worth it to keep them. They are at the point in their career that we may be better off trading them. Ohlund is a Free Agent as well! This is going to be the off-season of change. The biggest question is whether or not SUNDIN will be back....
The only little bright light is Cody Hodgson (wishing I was in Manitoba right now to see him playing with the Moose). I'm curious whether or not he will be dressed as a Canuck next season.
All I can say now is Go Jays Go!!

Spring in July?
Well we are still ankle deep in snow here in Kugaaruk with wind chills still dipping into the -20s. When will Spring arrive in the snowy north. Each morning I wake up with the hope that today will be the day but alas, I put on my parka and my Sorels and tramp outside to frigid weather and icy blocks of snow.
The nights are becoming shorter with dusk like light breaking through the clouds for all but 3 hours a night. We have ordered some black-out curtains for the spare rooms - hopefully this will "stop" the upcoming 24-hour sun from filtering into our eyelids as we sleep.
Last weekend we made the most of our spring like weather (-10) by heading out on the land with Corey, Lindsay (their two wee-ones) and Jo-Ann for a picnic (Yes a Picnic!). It was beautiful and chilly. We took the sleds about a kilometer outside of town to where there was an overhang of rock and snow. We were nicely sheltered from the wind and the wind chill. After a nice lunch, photo ops and some sliding down the hill we headed back to town, only to head up to the cross on the hill above the town. It was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
I've been passing my time lately by reading everything I can about Disney Land - I think that all of the warm thoughts have made me a little crazy. I have been opening my windows lately to the cool breeze! Don't wrap me in a little white jacket yet, to me my body says I should be stomping around in mud and dodging rain drops.
Life in Kugaaruk:
To all that have been wondering, I'm officially over my cold! Thank the Lord!! I don't get sick often but when I do it seems that it always goes into my chest and I spend an extra week coughing and hacking like I'm a 60 year old man who has smoked a pack a day for his whole life... I drank so much tea and water over the week and a half I was sick I thought I was going to freeze in the subzero temperatures.
I'm officially back into work-out mode: I learned today that the screws have come in for the weight system at the Detachment so it will be nice to be able to work out muscles that haven't been touched since from before we left Manitoba. It took a while to get back into the swing of things. All the beer and treats from our vacation in March....uggg... I'm just glad I'm back into my routine!
Hughie and I bit the bullet and upgraded our Internet package - from 2Gigs a month to 5Gigs!! I'm hoping that this will last us the full month. It allows us more downloading/uploading capabilities but also a fast speed in general. Although, at this time of the day (8:00pm) you run slow anyways because of all the people online in the community and surrounding areas.
Hope everyone is enjoying their spring weather - and if someone could send some warm air up my way I would appreciate it as would my dry skin.

Fiddlestick Sardines!!!
Today is the first official day that I truly hate living in the North! No, it isn't because of the almost 24-hour sunlight, or the lack of spring weather....it is because Bon Jovi is going to be playing in Moncton on June 27th AND Daughtry is playing in Charlottetown on July 4th (Charlottetown's Festival of Lights) with Theory of a Deadman... Yes I know I have seen both of them and in the case of Bon Jovi - I've seen them twice. Yet it doesn't make much difference to me, I am a true fan and having them so close to my neck of the woods is hard to swallow!
I guess I will wait to see when their websites get updated with their updated tour info. Hopefully I will be able to catch a concert or two while out on vacation in August.
What a way to add to my pounding headache!

Key Nations Gather in Washington for Historic Polar Summit
For Release: Apr 20, 2009
Read the U.S. News & World Report article: "Plight of Penguins and Polar Bears."
On Monday, April 6, ministers from nations representing the Arctic and Antarctic regions gathered at the State Department in Washington for high-level talks on climate change and other issues that are affecting the two Poles. The summit marked the first time that Arctic Council nations and Antarctic Treaty members have ever gathered to meet as one body.
World Wildlife Fund officials who manage the organization’s Arctic and Antarctic programs participated in the summit as official observers.
The summit comes at a critical time for the Polar Regions, as they show signs of significant impacts from climate change that could have serious implications for the rest of the planet. The meeting coincided with an update on Arctic sea ice conditions by NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center. Arctic sea ice has melted to record low levels in recent summers and NASA and NSIDC have said that sea ice cover in the Arctic in the winter months has been lower in the past six years than at any other time in 30 years of satellite tracking.
2008 On Track For Lowest-Ever Sea Ice In Arctic
WASHINGTON, DC, September 15, 2008 – Declining ice thickness and what is looking like the second lowest coverage on record means that Arctic sea ice may well have reached its lowest levels ever in terms of total volume, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said today. The final figures on the minimum ice coverage for this year are expected in a matter of days, but this year's minimum figures are already flirting with last year’s record low of 1.59 million square miles.
“If you take reduced ice thickness into account, there is probably less ice overall in the Arctic this year than in any other year since monitoring began,” said Dr. Martin Sommerkorn, senior climate change adviser for WWF’s Arctic Program. “This is also the first year that the Northwest Passage over the top of North America and the Northeast Passage over the top of Russia are both free of ice.”
Sommerkorn said the continuing loss of older, thicker ice means that the Arctic ice cover is following a trend of becoming younger and thinner each year. The area of ice that is at least five years old has decreased by 56 percent between 1985 and 2007. The oldest ice types have essentially disappeared. Taken together, the new figures clearly show the Arctic is experiencing the continuation of an accelerated declining trend.
“We are expecting confirmation of 2008 being either the lowest or the second-lowest year in terms of summer ice coverage,” said Sommerkorn. “This means two years in a row of record lows since we started recording Arctic sea ice coverage and a continuing catastrophic downward trend. There are already signs that species such as polar bears are experiencing negative effects as climate change erodes the ice platform on which they rely. These changes are also affecting the peoples of the Arctic whose traditional livelihoods depend on healthy ecosystems.”
The trend of melting Arctic ice is also alarming for the rest of the world. “The Arctic is a key factor in stabilizing the global climate,” Sommerkorn said.
“Arctic ice is like a mirror, reflecting the sun’s heat back into space. As that ice goes, Arctic waters absorb more heat, adding to global warming. The local warming of the Arctic will also soon release more greenhouse gases from the Arctic that were previously locked in permanently frozen ground. This means there will be two powerful feedbacks from the Arctic affecting the global environment. This is not just an Arctic problem, it is a global problem, and it demands a global response.”
The governments of the world are currently negotiating a new climate agreement to come into force in 2013 when the first phase of the Kyoto Protocol ends. Sommerkorn said governments must speed up these talks and ensure a new international climate agreement is reached at the U.N. Summit in Copenhagen in December 2009, just 15 months from now.
